Proklaim - CROWN

CROWN - Proklaim (Rap) The king of our music review blog, Proklaim, is back for our twentieth review of his work, and how apt that today’s track is named “CROWN.” This firehose of content, spitting out new rhymes at least twice a month, brings us a lush retro 90s style groove that gave us some Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony vibes. There’s a maturity to this one, from the contemplative and sun drenched guitar lick in the backing to the hazy jazz horn providing color behind a crisp percussion production. Proklaim is back on his positivity on this one, forever manifesting his rise and success. With ambition and drive like he has shown with us over the last year, these are more than just words.

Best Lyric: “Now we’re on the brink of manifesting major things, celebrate the future in advance.“

Feye - River

River - Feye (Pop) Following two critically acclaimed EPs, today on the blog Feye delivers a driving pop midtempo with retro 80s influences in her compelling new track, “River.” The song begins mysteriously, seemingly placed underwater from within the titular river, before a hard hitting 80s style drum kit takes over and never lets go. Feye has a soothing and mature alto, which flows like water all over the track. As a whole, the production gave us hints of early Robyn, as Feye tells a lover that, while they may sweetly bring her flowers, they don’t see her whole self. Upbeat with a dash of melancholy, the track makes for an excellent pairing with a summer drive.

Best Lyric: “You’re looking for someone you can no longer find.”

Marika Lejon - Forbidden Love

Forbidden Love - Marika Lejon (Pop) Pop songstress Marika Lejon’s desire for her love interest is denied in her latest track “Forbidden Love.” With such a plucky and upbeat sounding track, it surprised us to learn that “Forbidden Love” was inspired by a terror attack on a gay pub in Oslo. At its core, the song is about people in love who cannot be together, and so the inspiration certainly makes sense. Marika’s vocals have a Gwen Stefani quality to them as she spins her tale over a trotting mid tempo that feels like a travelling song. With quirky synths giving it character, Marika bakes a powerful message into a breezy pop number.

Don Bonya - Ride With Me (Omah)

Ride With Me (Omah) - Don Bonya (Rap) Don Bonya and Lapricaty deliver a chill island groove with latest single “Ride With Me (Omah)”. The entire production feels sun drenched, with a punchy afrobeat percussion overlaid with soft pads that bring a mysterious tension to the track—a haze that hangs in the air. Don’s flow is silky smooth and effortless, as a lilting soprano vocal hangs in the back to provide additional color. Our favorite moment was the choral backing in the chorus, stacked in a verb that served to enhance the daydream-like feel of the track. Doubling as both a simmering groove and a hip winder, Don Bonya’s “Ride With Me (Omah)” is feel good music.

Alicia Daydreams - Knock on My Door

Knock on My Door - Alicia Daydreams (R&B/Pop) 18 year old up and coming star Alicia Daydreams delivers a lush R&B production with “Knock on My Door”, where Alicia wishes that an ex would return to tell her that they miss her. Alicia is a woman of all trades as she sings, writes and plays her own productions. Speaking of the production, it’s full, thick and heavy, mirroring the emotions involved, supporting Alicia’s smoky and jazz influenced vocal performance that carries a maturity that belies her young age. Her strength in her performance is her emotive nature—you feel the yearning in each line. We also get some pleasant little ear candy in the door knock effects that help elevate the track. This is a high caliber track.

W1ZZY - Picture Me

Picture Me - W1ZZY (Rap) Today on the blog we get W1ZZY’s fourth single of 2024 with “Picture Me”, an in your face rap track where W1ZZY espouses his ambition, accolades and prowess. It’s not just words though, W1ZZY proves what he boasts as he goes hard on “Picture Me” with clever lyrics while riding the beat with ease. He’s also backed by a slamming production, led by a booming 808 and a trap percussion. In the background we get the sounds of an ominous church bell and soft strings which together add an element of eeriness and weight to the production—we thought of Puff Daddy’s “VICTORY” while listening to this. We also enjoyed all the little ear candy special effects strewn throughout, which help elevate the track.

Best Lyric: “Have some manners when you mention me.“

Issues - Child of SP

Child of SP - Issues (R&B) Child of SP is conflicted in his latest cut, “Issues”, a groovy R&B number boasting a catchy melody and a lush production. In “Issues”, Child of SP is completely smitten with his love interest, but is noticing that there is an undercurrent of issues that might get in the way of their love. Through it, his love prevails as he declares that they can work out their troubles. The track is excellently produced, with a slamming kick and thick bass line, placed in a cavernous space with soaring reverb. Overall the track gave us Nick Jonas vibes in his “Selfish” era. Overall, “Issues” is an excellent representation of modern R&B.

Best Lyric: “And if I cross your mind just know you got me by your side.“

Kelsie Kimberlin - The Drawer

The Drawer - Kelsie Kimberlin (Pop) Kelise Kimberline returns to the blog today with her 8-track collection “The Drawer”, which is an intimate depiction of leaving a toxic relationship behind and her road to recovery. Previously we’ve reviewed Kelsie’s “Road Trip Summer Remix”, “Turn Back” and “Parking Lot”, which show Kelsie to be a versatile artist considering the vast array of sounds and styles she covers across her catalogue. But before we dig into her latest project, let’s talk about Kelsie herself.

Kelsie Kimberlin is an American/Ukrainian musician and singer who strives in her music to balance entertainment and social themes with deep meanings underscoring her understanding of the power of music to make change. A student of music from an early age, Kelsie even took part in Yoko Ono’s Peace Project. A well rounded artist, Kelsie writes, records, performs and films.

“The Drawer” is Kelsie’s first EP, which birthed music videos for “Parking Lot” and “Twinkle”, with AI generated videos for the remaining six tracks. We were first introduced to this project with her song “Parking Lot”, which was accompanied by a vibrant music video. We called this a trap and latin infused hip winder with a plucky percussion production and seductive latin guitar. What surprised us in reviewing the “The Drawer”, on which “Parking Lot” comes later in the tracklist, is that this track is really an outlier on the project—a dancey record amongst a collection of intimate and personal tracks with a more straightforward pop sensibility.

Other single “Twinkle” is also a standout on the album, using the imagery from the nursery rhyme to depict the specialness she has found in another—that the things that are unique about them make them twinkle like a star. It’s a beautiful song and, along with “Parking Lot”, is a nice break from the heavier themes on the album.

Title track “The Drawer” caught our attention immediately with the deeply personal lyrics about finally being free from a toxic relationship. The specificity she uses to describe the trauma—the ex controlling her body and what she ate—was vulnerable and honestly shocking. It immediately hooks the audience to be invested in Kelsie’s story. Much like Adele and Taylor Swift’s tracks follow their exes, we assume “The Drawer” will haunt Kelsie’s.

“Fatal Attraction” continues the tale on a less somber note, as a plucky pop production backs a story about the chemical addiction one can feel to someone despite all of the red flags. It’s a Top 40 feeling cut with a very relatable message, as “Meet Me Anywhere” continues with a story of Kelsie trying to get the attention she needs.

“January Through December” is one of our favorites on the project, mainly due to the cleverness of the lyrics and catchiness of the melody. It’s a positive track about finding someone who actually stands beside her all year long, juxtaposed with “Summertime’s Gone” which laments the early collapse of that relationship.

But after her road to recovery, we get album closer “Recovery” which assures the audience that despite all the aftermath and turmoil, Kelsie has found herself again and returned to the girl she was. There’s a touching moment in this track as Kelsie thanks her friends and family for their support in her darkest hour.

With a clean production, heartfelt lyrics and a strong pop vocal, Kelsie shines on her first EP.

Edie Yvonne - 15 (When I Leave)

15 (When I Leave)- Edie Yvonne (Pop) Our favorite 15-year old artist, Edie Yvonne, has returned for the seventh time to our blog with latest track “15 (When I Leave)”, a song about getting ready to switch to a new high school. That teen angst is captured immediately by the guitar intro, leading us into a rock number dripping with attitude. There’s something that feels inspired by The Killers and Jimmy Eat World here (“The Middle” feels like a good comparison track), while delivering some early No Doubt girl power. We could definitely hear this track in the closing credits of a cult teen film—think like the end of Clueless or Legally Blonde. Not since JoJo has someone so young showed up with so much professional gloss. We look forward to Edie’s impending breakthrough.

Best Lyric: “Looking in mirrors and I see through myself.”

Sporty-O / Mizzo - Table Dance (Original Mix)

Table Dance (Original Mix) - Sporty-O / Mizzo (Rap) Sporty-O and Mizzo brought us back to our college days with the rap dance anthem “Table Dance.” When the tightly produced instrumental dropped, we immediately got vibes of “Pump Up The Jam”, but as the clever and often humorous lyrics began to tell a tale about capturing a stripper’s attention for a table dance, we were immediately put in the world of Ying Yang Twins, Master P, Juvenile and even those old 20 Fingers jams (“Lick It Before You Stick It”, “Boom I Fucked Your Boyfriend”). Chock full of references—even a Taylor Swift name drop—and sprinkled with ear candy from the productions of yesteryear (that cowbell!), this throwback vibe is perfect for a party playlist.

Best Lyric: “3AM and a stack of ones.“

Dannica - ABIDE

ABIDE - Dannica ft Bryan Trejo (Hip Hop) We welcome Dannica to the blog today with R&B/Hip Hop bangar, “ABIDE” featuring Bryan Trejo and Austin McCalla. This Canada-based Christina Hip Hop artist delivers a track that marries Hip Hop dance bop with scripture to forge a track about believing and trusting in the almighty. Dannica sings of the strife and trials that come in everyday life, and how she draws strength in persevering through her faith in God. She does so with a strong and soulful vocal, laying the foundation for Bryan and Austin to ride the beat. Don’t forget to check the well produced music video in addition to banging this one in your ride.

Best Lyrics: “No longer am I a slave to your old sick games”

Anthony Touma - Baklava

Baklava - Anthony Touma (Pop/R&B) Anthony Touma treats us to a sweet and sultry dessert with latest track “Baklava.” The track is an overall bop, a definite groove, lead by a perfect pop vocal with plenty of ear candy, also including some baked in 00s feels and R&B sensibility. We were trying to place the influence, and then Anthony delivered a suite of references to Justin Timberlake in the second verse that handed it right to us—we really liked the cute aside to please not sue him for the references haha. The production is immaculately polished and we can’t see any reason a track like this wouldn’t top the charts—in the 00s or today.

Best Lyrics: “She got me lovestoned, and I’m swear that she knows.”

Mara Liddle - girl of your dreams

girl of your dreams - Mara Liddle (Pop) After a bit of a hiatus, Mara Liddle returns to us with our first track in 2024, “girl of your dreams”, following 2023’s “Facebook Official”, “Oversharing”, “Be Alone” and “All Over The Place”. On “girl of your dreams”, Mara delivers yet another sharp and plucky pop confection with collaborator JB Thomas. There’s always a sweetness to Mara’s tracks—a cute innocence—as her tuned soprano slices through a tight production. There’s almost a Japanese pop feeling to her tracks, with a 90s electro-pop tinge. “girl of your dreams” explores the shock of unexpected affection from someone who barely knows her, someone conjuring a perfect image of her based on minor interactions. It’s not quite a love song, more of a contemplation on infatuation from the point of view of the target—something we found to be quite unique.

Dax - A Real Man

A Real Man Dax (Pop)  We last saw Dax assembled with a supergroup of 12 different artists on the Mega Remix of “Dear Alcohol”—as usual paired with a stellar music video. Today, he returns to us for the eighth time with “A Real Man”, which returns Dax to center stage. On “A Real Man”, our genre defying artist comes with a country-infused pop track about the false image of masculinity. With a strong point of view, Dax dissects the kind of man a woman might want, and analyzes the contradictions therein, describing how such a concept is no more than fantasy and ultimately destructive. With a strong and timely message and well-produced beat, we think this track would fit perfectly on Top 40 radio.

Best Lyric: “He’s the rock that she needs but she hammers away.”

Proklaim - PROMISED LAND

PROMISED LAND - Proklaim (Rap) Today we get our nineteenth track from Proklaim, “Promised Land”, a song that revisits the soul sample boombap beats era of hiphop from artists like Slum Village, early Kanye West and Talib Kweli. We also felt even older influences on this one, the flow feels very Fugees, often times evoking tracks from Lauryn Hill like “Lost Ones” or even “If I Ruled The World.” It’s a bumping groove for sure, Proklaim dispensing with his tried and true vocal layer chants this time in favor of hitting his rapid fire spit right out of the gate, relentless until the song’s conclusion. This one is one longing for the old school.

Best Lyric: “Most people only want to take.“

John Taglieri - Oh, There You Are

Oh, There You Are - John Taglieri (Pop) Today we welcome twice Billboard charting artist John Taglieri to the blog with his anthemic new single, “Oh, There You Are.” Tension abounds in this punchy number about finding a new place to go when reaching the end of the road, as guitar plucks lead us in with anticipation before the drums slam and vocal chants take this up to 11. The track has a real “rise up” feeling—a fist in the air while singing along with the group kinda vibe, think maybe Pink Floyd “The Wall.” John’s vocals are whip smart and speedy, adding to the overall tension of the track. The crescendo, and our favorite moment, comes with the dense choral arrangement in the bridge. This is a windows down, turn the speakers up kinda record.

Best Lyric: “And everything I had was never meant to really last.”
