Reviews / PRESS

Tracy’s tale so succinctly captures the contemporary lifestyle of young gay man in NY dealing with such issues as forming bonding friendships, rejection, online hookups, hangups with sexual role-playing and perceived masculinity in a culture that has moved on from being dominated by the AIDS crisis.

It is refreshingly warm, witty, extremely funny, with more than its share of sadness too.
— queer guru
You don’t have to be gay or male to know what it’s like going through the things Jamie encounters, processing what has happened to you and trying to come out the other end a better man. I really enjoyed this series and am hoping there will be more.
— Acting Hour
Not very often we have the occasion to encounter such a vast and well written plot, and frankly, this is all that we can care about right now.

so i just binge watched every episode of History s1 & s2 and this is what I have to say...

BRAVO ... and thank you for sharing your work. There were times that I literally laughed out loud, felt sad and teared up, was reminded of my own past relationships and my circle of friends. You have a new fan in me and I look forward to seeing what else you create...
— Fan Letter
I watched your entire web series “History” last night via Amazon/Dekkoo.

I rarely write fan notes, but I wanted to tell you I appreciated it. ... You gave me a slice of life about that that felt very real. ... I googled you today, and History was based on your own breakup. It seems this kind of verisimilitude is often based on personal experience.

There’s so much pedagogical story-telling today, driven by making simple-minded ideological points. ... Thanks for giving me something *real*.
— Fan Letter
The first and best gay web series that doesn’t play itself as a silly sit-com with an occasional “gay issue”- If you like a series with real human inter-actions and relationships, gay characters that resemble people that you might actually know, three-dimensional characters that you like and dislike at the same time, stories about the foibles of friendship, hanging onto a relationship past the expiration date, genuine emotionally strong moments and bonus, an engaging story that slips into the past and present with intelligence. All this in 6 episodes, so glad that the 2nd Season is due in the fall. History is reason enough to get Dekkoo and then stick around for the rest of it’s unrivaled gay content.
— Amazon Customer

This is powerful and emotional, and well done for a first-time writer/producer/director. The scenes are particularly powerful and convincing. NYC gay dating life and the friends that either support you or bring you down are huge themes in this film. This film raises the discussion of letting your walls down enough to let someone else in, which is a sensitive topic and not brought up often in film. The target audience is LGBTQ people and the people who love LGBTQ themed films. Overall I enjoyed the series and look forward to season 2.
— Amazon Customer
[I was] deeply affected ... by some of the content: ... Your series validated me. ... In the same way that Jamie was searching for validation and security and had to recreate his identity when his relationship ended, I feel like watching your series this weekend helped validate that I am healthy and ok and just as confused as everyone else. That makes me feel a lot better.
— Fan Letter

Too much of gay cinema is driven by a desire to deliver simple-minded ideological points. I’d rather see slices of actual gay life, especially parts of it I wouldn’t experience myself like NYC hookup culture.

”History” delivers this. It rings true. It seems to capture some actual reality in its net.
— Amazon Customer
Finally nice to see a webseries that deals with actual real life issues with real people instead of the normal “everything works out always” theme. Real life is messy and hard and this depicts that beautifully. Absolute must-see!!!!!!
— Amazon Customer

Funny, meaningful and moving, this is a truly realistic slice of modern gay life in New York. There are some great lines & sensitive, thoughtful treatment of difficult topics - like the reality of hooking up and how it makes us feel.
— Amazon Customer
Just became a subscriber to Dekkoo and watched all of the History episodes. Fantastic! Congrats on a job well done. I’m looking forward to Season 2!
— Fan Letter

This series was fantastic. Well written and well acted. Can’t wait for the 2nd Season!
— Amazon Customer
A fresh breath of air! All too often this genre is filled with vacuous clichés, so it’s great to see realism with both the characters and their everyday struggles.
— Amazon Customer
The show is so damned intelligent and I am so looking forward to watching more-
— Fan Letter
I really enjoyed it. I hope you make more episodes. Keep up the great work.

Reviews

Tracy excels as a writer not just with the fact that his plots cover many scenarios that gay men negotiating the dating world must deal with, where even in the world of PREP still makes for uncomfortable conversations about having sex with men who are HIV+. No matter how wrong we know that being remotely prejudice is, it is still a conversation that most gay men have had with themselves at sometime in their dating lives.

It is however his witty script peppered with more than its fair share of slightly caustic one-lines that contributes a great deal to the success of the series.
— Queer Guru
...we will be completely honest when we will say that [Jack Tracy] is a visionary and a very important figure in the LGBT movie scene. Every piece of his work we landed our eyes on was in one way or another innovative, interesting and altogether an element of reference in this field. History is a series we really need...
— Feel The Reel International Film Festival
Whilst it’s a tale of a gay man and his gay friends, it’s never truly about being gay. None of the drama or tension or angst comes from being gay. It comes from being human, from experiences and decisions rather than who the characters are at their core, it comes from their relationships.
— Acting Hour
Jack Tracy ... does not fail in bringing out the fast yet engaging life of New York City. He ... beautifully brings out complicated emotions through easy going lines. His direction has made the scenes realistic and impactful. The use of two different time lines has been brilliantly put to use.

The leading character Jamie has been played by Tracy himself. His acting is natural, he has a beautiful screen presence and his overall performance is incredibly spontaneous. ...Not just him, all [the] other actors, including Roger Yeh who plays Stephen, ha[ve] done a great job.

The cinematography is excellent and so is the editing.

Fan Letters/Comments

I watched the entire second series almost as soon as it came out ... Thanks for making it. The verisimilitude was again a stand out.

Your treatment of HIV was excellent: the natural fears, the surrounding thought process (“undetectable, prep, condoms”), the real-life impulses to carelessness (when your character let it happen when you didn’t have a second condom). ...

One particularly effective moment was when your character was having almost nauseatingly good romantic fortune (multiple guys wanting him), but was then viciously cut down to size by the guy showing photos of cuter guys he’d had. .I can totally imagine a conversation like that happening, down to the specific words chosen. Maybe you have actually been in that conversation. Either way you nailed it.
— Fan Letter
What a great, well-written, and well-acted production. It was so engaging, and at times humorous, thoughtful, poignant and heartbreaking. Thanks so much for the tremendous effort that must have gone into making this series. ... Hope you guys are able to continue the story line with more episodes some day.
— se926 (YouTube)
WoW, that was really well done. This is one of the few series I’ve seen that accurately does a superior job of portraying our community. This dares to talk honestly about our issues without sugar-coating and it’s all played by actors who appear realistic. I am so happy to have stumbled across this series and say BRAVO . . . for creating this. This was every bit as good as Hunting Season and in some ways, much, much better.
— Tom Gibble (YouTube)
[H]ands down probably the best web series that I’ve watched. I’ve watched horizon, and out and others. But this is definitely the best. Keep it coming. Great job.

oh, I miss your show allready ... will definitely watch it again in a few weeks when the details will start to get a little blurred ... :)
I sincerely hope, that there will be more ... really enjoyed your work and keep my fingers crossed, that a lot of other gay men will too because you do not have to hide [being] compared to “The Horizon”, “Hunting Season”, “Please like me” and the lot ...!!
. . .
Thanks again for your formidable webseries!

I just have to say I’ve loved every episode of History. Hope there are many more. ... This show brings back good and sad memories. Keep them coming.

Why O why is this series not more out there? This is one of the best web series I have seen! This needs to be promoted more. Absolutely wonderful! Can we expect a third season?
